PROGRAM NOTES
Kaleidoscope was written as a way to showcase all of the colors of the horn. From its origins in hunting calls to its beauty in modern ensembles, the horn embodies a remarkable sense of wonder, so this piece was written to highlight everything that makes the instrument unique.
The music shifts through a variety of tonal centers and meter changes, with each section showing off a different color of the horn. The opening section, eerie and mysterious, returns throughout the piece, providing the listener with a constant to listen for as the kaleidoscope unfolds.
A variety of extended techniques specific to the horn are utilized, each creating distinct textures and new atmospheres. From the mute changes to the rhythmic complexities, the music consistently shifts into something new, providing the listener with a sense of never quite knowing what color is coming next.
